Here’s a glimpse of our two-month holiday in the United States, always my favorite destination. This time, we embarked on a journey of state-hopping across 11 states on the East Coast, including Washington DC, New York, West Virginia, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, Connecticut, and Indiana. One unforgettable moment was taking a remarkable leap into the Atlantic Ocean from a 14-foot height, encountering wonderful people along the way.
I cherish the memories of invigorating workout sessions with African American and Hispanic ladies in the gym, a testament to the rich diversity of the country. The United States truly stands out as an exceptionally multi-racial and multi-ethnic nation, where people proudly display the American flag outside their homes while maintaining a respectful and humble attitude towards individuals from different backgrounds and communities. This, to me, embodies the essence of democracy.
Special thanks to Siddharth Sharma (my brother), Neha Kapila Sharma(sisinlaw) and their lil daughter Kashish for hosting us, providing delightful company, engaging in long drives, and sharing in the fun. Our stay was mostly at Twin Oaks Manor in Pittsburgh, where Siddharth also stayed.
#SATS Premier Lounge June 2, 2022 – After our unforgettable journey to the West Coast of the USA back in 2013, we embarked on a new adventure, this time exploring the East Coast. Over the course of two months, we experienced the stark differences in lifestyle between the West and East Coasts. As the initial landing point for European settlers, much of the architecture and ambiance of the East Coast bears a striking resemblance to the homes of its early colonizers.
Starting from the mid-Atlantic region of Washington DC, we marveled at the vastness of the country, with its diverse landscapes and cultures. Enduring a lengthy flight of 8 hours, with a 3-hour layover in Doha followed by another 14 hours to Washington DC, we finally arrived.
After a quick shower at the #AlmaharaLounge, we enjoyed a brief taste of Middle Eastern vibes, complemented by a remarkable view of the Great Nafud Desert from the plane as we approached DC.
Our stay in Washington DC began with an early wakeup call at 5 am, as things tend to open early in this vibrant city. A visit to Starbucks at 5:30 am was a testament to the energetic American spirit.
June 4, 2022 – Our exploration of Washington DC included visits to iconic landmarks such as the national monument honoring George Washington, and Capitol Hill, home to the United States Capitol Building. We marveled at the grandeur of the Capitol Dome, adorned with murals depicting pivotal moments in American history. Our tour also took us to the US Supreme Court and the Library of Congress, the largest library in the world. We concluded our day at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History.
June 5, 2022 – Washington DC left a lasting impression on us with its diverse array of monuments, memorials, parks, and museums. We paid homage to figures such as Abraham Lincoln, Franklin Roosevelt, and Martin Luther King Jr. at various memorials. The city’s vibrant atmosphere, characterized by African-American street performers and lively restaurants, added to its allure. The best part was that most museums and memorials were free to visit, allowing us to explore at our leisure.
After bidding farewell to Washington DC, we set off for Pittsburgh, where my brother Siddharth Sharma and his family eagerly awaited our arrival. Along the way, we made a stop in Virginia to visit the famous Arlington Cemetery, the final resting place of notable figures such as John F. Kennedy.
Our journey continued, filled with memorable experiences and encounters as we traversed the East Coast of the USA.

Notable scenes from iconic movies like “The Next Three Days” and “Flashdance” were filmed on the Duquesne Incline, adding to the allure of this historic landmark. Pittsburgh’s contribution to cinema extends beyond these classics, with films like “The Silence of the Lambs” and the cult hit “Night of the Living Dead” elevating the city’s status in popular culture.

Crossing the US-Canada border is a delightful experience, reminiscent of enjoying samosas in Canada and strolling back to the USA. Our adventures continue with a Maid of the Mist boat tour, promising breathtaking views and unforgettable memories.
New York – Spent the nights in Times Square, USA, at the Knickerbocker. Yesterday, arrived at Newark Airport (in New Jersey) via Spirit Airlines. Explored Midtown Manhattan, indulged in Ghirardelli hot chocolate, and savored pizza at Joe’s Pizza Broadway, famously featured in the Spiderman movie. Traveled via the NY subway to Lower Manhattan, visiting iconic sites like Wall Street, the New York Stock Exchange, the Charging Bull, symbolizing the financial district, and the Fearless Girl Statue, symbolizing women’s rights. Took in the skyline from the One World Trade Center and the Trump Tower Building, then strolled along Broadway. Covered various New York boroughs and sampled fare from a food truck.
For breakfast, enjoyed a hearty American-style meal at Andrew’s Cafe NY, relishing New York’s superior bagels due to their unique water and cooking method, along with creamy vanilla coffee. Rushed to visit the Statue of Liberty on Liberty Island via the subway, symbolizing freedom and justice, and later explored City Hall Park and walked across the Brooklyn Bridge. Ended the day dining at Sona Restaurant NY and Gupshup NY, followed by a 30-minute nighttime stroll back to the Knickerbocker Hotel, passing landmarks like the Empire State Building and Madison Park.
Central Park provided a backdrop for some impromptu moves to Spanish music, enjoying the vibrant atmosphere.
The day began with breakfast at Junior’s in Times Square, a favorite haunt for politicians and celebrities alike. Traveled via subway to South Manhattan, visiting the World Trade Center Memorial, then headed uptown to Central Park. Concluded the New York trip with a visit to New Jersey, reconnecting with former colleague along the Hudson River at Chelsea Piers. Wrapped up with breakfast at Zaro Bakery, sampling cinnamon raisin bagels and chocolate rugelach.
Caught a performance of Aladdin the Musical at the New Amsterdam Theater, a dazzling Broadway experience not to be missed in New York City. Recalled past Broadway shows like Phantom of the Opera and Cats, and shared an anecdote about an unusual late-night shopping experience at H&M.
Visit to Hershey’s Chocolate World in Pennsylvania: This iconic destination serves as the headquarters for The Hershey Company, established by Milton S. Hershey in 1903. Embark on a delightful tour through the chocolate-making process, experiencing everything from sorting and cleaning to roll refining, milling, and chocolate conching. Immerse yourself in a captivating 4D chocolate movie experience, and don’t miss indulging in iconic treats like Hershey’s Kisses and Reese’s Peanut Butter Shake. Continuing the journey, we drove to Strasburg, home to the still-operational Strasburg Rail Road, which holds the title of the USA’s oldest continually operating railroad, founded in 1832. Along the way, we encountered the Amish community in Lancaster, America’s oldest Amish settlement. Here, thousands of residents maintain a traditional “Plain” lifestyle, offering a glimpse into a bygone era characterized by a simpler, horse-and-buggy-centric way of life. I loved Peanut butter shake (not to miss)
In Ohio, highlight was a visit to the iconic museum in Dayton. Inside, we marveled at the Wright Brothers Museum, where the original airplane they crafted and flew in 1905 is on display. It’s fascinating to learn from the knowledgeable guide how this pioneering aircraft landed on sand without the aid of wheels. The Wright Brothers ingeniously applied principles from their bicycle company to their aviation endeavors, showcasing their remarkable ingenuity. Later, we explored the National Air Force Museum of the USA, admiring the array of aircraft from World War I and World War II, a testament to the marvels of technology throughout history.
During the weekend getaway, we had the pleasure of meeting some delightful Indian families in Dublin and Powell cities in Ohio, enjoying fun activities with the kids.
An exciting addition to my collection was acquiring a rare old stamp: a 2¢ stamp issued by the United States Post Office Department in 1928 commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Wright Brothers’ historic flight. This stamp, housed in the official first-day cover of the Dayton Stamp Club, also pays tribute to the 1928 International Civil Aeronautics Conference in Washington, D.C. A special thanks to the helpful lady at the Air Force Museum in Dayton, Ohio, who directed me to this unique find.
